This beautifully knitted flag is hand crafted in the traditional Aran fisherman's knit style by the artist's mother. Each shamrock is carefully crocheted and stitched to the wool. The Aran knitting style served a most unique purpose. Sweaters for the men of the family were knitted in a unique family stitch which became identification for those fishermen who may have drowned at sea. The complex patterns follow a general recognizable style but within that individuations occurred. The old style sweaters would be knitted from raw wool rich with lanolin so that the natural waterproof qualities of the wool would prevail for the men working in a very wet environment. © 2006 SOLD
