Palestinian

This flag is constructed from traditional articles of Palestine clothing; the men's head wrap. Keffiyah is the red and white area. This wrap which is usually a square cloth is often cotton, sometimes wool and can be worn in various ways according to regional style, often secured by a rope circlet. It is a practical garment which permits various loose draping or tighter wraps depending on the climate, either affording sun protection or warmth from cold desert winds. The blue star field area is cut from the decorated front of a ladies gown. Like the Mayan huipil these gowns also become a place for expressing identity and different Palestinian towns have their own specific patterns. A ladies veil supplied the fringe. The stars are represented by coins which are a traditional adornment of the Palestine wedding hat or sometimes a vest. © 2004
