This tribute to African Americans is the second constructed in the series. It is made from traditional African cotton prints. These traditional prints are richly layered with images from Africa through wax resist batik techniques. The beauty of African fabrics is that they often skillfully entangle multiple themes together that delightfully explore the themes of life. These fabrics to me beautifully express rhythm and beat in a visual manner that reflects the delicious tradition of African music. Cowry shells are the stars and grouped with myrrh and christmas beads they also form the fringe. © 2004 This flag is now in the permanent collection of the New Britain Museum of American Art.
